The Ralph and Luci Schey Foundation has established the Program in honor of Colonel John Kenneth Addison for his leadership role as the first Battalion Commander of the 249th Engineer Combat Battalion during World War II.

Additionally, the scholarship title recognizes the 249th Engineer Combat Battalion and the unit's soldiers for their valorous service in the performance of assigned missions during combat operations.
